Have you ever seen the spectacular colors of the maples paint the landscape of New England? If not, join us as we hike, walk or paddle under a canopy of fall colors in the ancient Appalachian Mountains. The brilliantly jeweled gold and ruby ridges and the lakes will be in your memory forever.
The Mountaineers’ Recreational Properties Division will again offer an eight-day day hiking/paddling trip to the end terminus of the Appalachian Trail in Maine October 2nd - 9th. We will be staying at Little Lyford Pond Camp (LLPC) and the new, just opened Gorman Chairback Camp (GCC) of the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC). All activities will be day trips 1-8 miles in length and 100 to 1,800 ft elevation gain.
Nate Shedd, naturalist who has been with us for the past two excursions to New England will be with the group to enrich your experience. This hiking/paddling trip will be paired with Kansas City Outing Club whose leader is also a Mountaineer.
A variety of activities are available to choose from each day:
On Saturday October 1 there will be a pre-trip adventure of exploring old town Portland, Maine and nearby Peaks Island. The day of walking or bicycling on Peaks Island will conclude with a Maine Lobster dinner at the historic Inn on the island before returning to Portland on a small island ferry.
